This chapter deals with the different systems of classification from the viewpoints of classical taxonomy and the current practices. The concepts of artificial and natural systems of classification is explained under classical taxonomy. The current systems of classification provide a detailed account of the basic concepts, principles, procedures, advantages and disadvantages of Phenetics (Numerical Taxonomy), Cladistics (Phylogenetic Systematics) and Synthetics (Evolutionary Systematics). A comparison of the three systems of classification along with a note on Phenogram, Cladogram, Phylogram and Ominispective classification is also presented.
