The Theory of social contract is as old as political speculation itself. This theory finds prominent place in the political thinking of both the east and the west. Kautilyas Arthasastra made a pointed reference to it, while the sophists described the state to be a product of contract between
men. However, in modern times the theory received a systematic and comprehensive treatment in the writings of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and J.J. Rauseau.
