The Modern state is known as welfare state. The idea of police state, prevailed in the 19th Century, was replaced by the welfare state. The concept of welfare state is essentially British in origin. It took its roots around the second world war when the government of Great Britain resolved to tackle the five giants facing the people want, disease, ignorance, squalor and idleness. A series of measures were passed resulting in the nationalization of railways, cool mines and steel; nationalization of Bank of England and that of transport. The provision was also made for social insurance scheme, milk for school children, free medical service, free secondary education ; old age pension, widow's benefits, unemployment benefits and other liberal measures. After the II world war, the idea of welfare state spread in other countries also.
