Metazoans are multicellular, motile, heterotrophic organisms we commonly identify as animals. These are represented in 33 major and minor phyla. General characteristics of Kingdom Metazoa are enumerated with reference to their symmetry, body architecture, cells, tissues, and skeletons, nutrition, respiration and excretion, nervous system, reproduction, ontogeny and metazoan embryogeny: Protostomia verses Deuterostomia. A synopsis of the existing Metazoan phyla as reviewed by R.D. Barnes in the fifth edition of his book ‘Invertebrate Zoology’ is provided along with a note on Parazoa.
