The migration of fishes has been a topic of interest for a long time. Since the eels did not lay eggs in the fresh water and no larval stage were seen philosophers like Aristotle and Pliny put forth theories to explain the origin of young eels. According to Aristotle the eels has no gonads or sex cells and therefore came from inside the earth. Pliny had a better theory, according to him the eels had no gonads, there were no males or female and the young ones arose from pieces of skin that were shed, when the adults rubbed themselves against the rocks.
