The stomach is a bag like structure, shaped like a 'J' and is the widest part of the alimentary canal. The stomach is continuous with the oesophagus at one end and the duodenum at the other end. The stomach has two curvatures. The lesser and the greater curvatures. The lesser curvature is on the posterior side continuous with the posterior wall of the pharynx. Just before the stomach reaches the duodenum, it curves upwards and forms the lower portion of the 'J'. The anterior wall of the oesophagus continues as the anterior side of the stomach that first curves upwards making an acute angle with the oesophagus, then it curves downwards forming the greater curvature. At the lower end the anterior wall forming greater curvature curves slightly upwards to meet the duodenum. This forms the lower part of the 'J'.
