One of the major issues related to electrical engineering is the process of active power transfer from a source to a load through an appropriate network. Though the system may contain multiple sources, as seen between a pair of terminals, the system can be represented by a single generator, as per Thevenin theorem, connected to the load. Hence it is of interest to analyse the power transfer from a single generator to the load. Electrically, the active power consumed is always by the resistive element (this could be an actual resistive element or a fictitious one representing the active electrical power drawn by the load, as in an electric motor).
