Human variation is nothing but human biology. Variation is produced by the inheritance of particular characteristics from ancestors and by the action of the environment. All variations are determined by heredity and environment. However the importance of heredity and environment may vary from character to character. The genetic and environmental components of variation are complementary to one another. The action of various genes in determining the function and form of the organism, is modified by the environment. Thus we find that population of the same species which are exposed to different environments for long periods differ genetically from one another in many number of ways. These genetic differences are often referred to as phenotypic differences which form the basis of the population comparisons.
